About This Program

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science offers students technical depth in data science. Students pursuing this degree will cover the foundational aspects of data science, then progress through more difficult tools, techniques, and methodologies used in data science. Students can tailor their program of study through concentrations including deep learning and business intelligence. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to confidently approach problems or challenges in virtually any discipline: business, finance or economics, engineering, healthcare, or the physical or social sciences. Graduates will be able to deliver reproducible data analyses and solutions. Graduates will understand ethical, privacy, and security considerations in the conduct of data analyses. Graduates will be able to communicate the story in the data through the use of data visualization techniques.

What You Will Do

  1. Recognize requirements for data. Efficiently collect the required data from a variety of sources and organize it appropriately.
  2. Determine the best method to conduct an analysis for a specified situation and given data. Conduct the analysis or analyses and completely evaluate all aspects of the results.
  3. Deliver reproducible analyses and results.
  4. Effectively communicate any or all aspects of an analysis and all aspects of the results of that analysis to either or both a technical or non-technical audience. Information communicated could include the method used for analysis, any parameter settings that would affect the analysis or results, and an error analysis, etc.
  5. Explain the ethical, privacy, and security issues related to data science analyses and communication.
  6. Obtain real-world experience through project-based coursework and the Senior Project.
  7. Stand out with a specific technical area of expertise by completing a concentration in any of the available concentrations.

Students must choose a concentration for this degree program:

The Flex Concentration offers students breadth in data science. Students will learn foundational material in machine learning, sentiment analysis, advanced methods in data science, and simulation. This concentration is a good option for students intending to go onto a master's program in data science where they can pursue in-depth knowledge.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this concentration, the student will be able to:

  • Conduct a variety of data analyses using appropriate tools and methods for specified problems or challenges.
  • Explain why the method and tools selected to conduct an analysis are the best for that specific analysis.
  • Develop and present final reports on data analyses.

This course introduces students to machine learning. If provides students with a broad overview of machine learning topics for both supervised and unsupervised methods. The topics typically include classification, decision trees, association rule-based classification, support vector machines, regression (linear, logistic and Bayesian), clustering, k-Nearest Neighbor, principal component analysis (PCA), Feature Selection, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Factor Analysis. Additional topics can include ensemble methods such as stacking, bagging and boosting. (Prerequisite: DATS311)

This course follows the Machine Learning I course and builds on the topics originally covered. In this course, students will reconsider the various types of machine learning but now in the context of increasing their efficacy. That is, the focus will be on increasing the efficiency and effectiveness as well as the accuracy of the machine learning methods by evaluating their output and conducting error analyses on their results. Furthermore, the results from the various machine learning methods will be examined, e.g. by ROC, to determine their effectiveness in solving a given problem. Errors will be reported using a variety of methods including misclassification, the Gini Index, and entropy. Students will learn how to adjust a variety of parameters and/or hyperparameters to increase the efficiency of running machine learning methods as well as the accuracy of their output. In addition, underfitting and overfitting will be considered. Regularization and optimization will be introduced. (Prerequisite: DATS331)

Sentiment analysis is a specialized form of natural language process intended to determine opinions expressed in written text. This is a lab-based course designed to implement topics covered in labs. The topics covered include the concepts and theories behind Sentiment Analysis. Discussion of the research approaches taken in Sentiment Analysis, knowledge-based techniques, statistical methods, supervised and unsupervised learning, and hybrid approaches. Tasks in Sentiment Analysis will be discussed and implemented through labs, e.g. classifying polarity, and determining an emotional scale. Students will learn how to generate a Sentiment Lexicon. This course examines various linear optimization concepts and problem solving techniques commonly found in manufacturing, transportation, and military operations. The goal of optimization is to find the best possible solution to a problem given a number of constraints. The emphasis of this course is problem solving. This course includes the construction and analysis of real world problems and the application of various linear optimization techniques to find an optimal solution. An optimization software package will also be presented and used to solve problems. This course covers a wide range of linear optimization techniques. Topics include linear programming; the simplex algorithm and goal programming; sensitivity analysis and duality; problems in transportation and transshipment; network models; and integer programming. The Concentration in Deep Learning first provides foundational knowledge. Probabilistic graphical models provide the basis for designing artificial neural networks. The tools and methods of machine learning covered continue developing foundational knowledge. Next, deep learning, that has grown from the study of artificial neural networks, is studied in detail. Last, students can choose to learn about advanced methods in data science or today’s state-of-the-art programs in artificial neural networks, e.g. TensorFlow® by the Google Brain Team operated by Jupyter® notebooks in Python®.

This course is a contemporary study of popular culture in America – its development and characteristics, its role in shaping our individual lives and key social institutions; and its broad effects on our globalizing world. The course is designed around the interdisciplinary nature of cultural studies, and students will learn how to use key concepts and theories to examine popular culture from a number of different fields including Sociology, Anthropology, Communications, History, Cultural Studies, English, Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, and American Studies. Introduction to Sociology introduces students to the sociological investigation of human interaction and behavior in society. This course is a worldwide survey of prehistoric cultural adaptations from the first use of bone and stone tools to the ancient mysterious civilizations of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe including recent archaeological discoveries. Emphasis is on the development of technologies, social groups and the patterns of cultural development. Archeological excavation methods and archeological artifacts are discussed in considerable detail. In a developed country, one can often take for granted the safety of the food supply. 1 in 6 Americans get sick from foodborne illness annually, with an estimated 128,000 requiring hospitalization and resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths annually. Practical knowledge in safe food sourcing, storage, preparation and serving is addressed along with providing tips for practical awareness of techniques for staying safe. In a global society, food safety is not just a local issue, and everyone should have a working knowledge of food safety and what to look for to remain free of foodborne illness. In this course, students will learn general techniques for preparing and consuming food that is free from harmful pathogens, incorporating the flow of food from purchasing through storage and preparation to serving. Students will explore contemporary and cross cultural issues surrounding food safety in a global society. Practical knowledge about preparing safe food and red flags to watch for when dining out will be explored. Students will learn where to find information on health inspection reports, foodborne illness outbreaks and recall alerts, and will know where to report any suspected foodborne illness or suspicious activity related to the food and water supply.

Literature has the ability to shape the way a nation thinks and behaves; it both responds to important issues in society and (re)shapes them. For far too long, the literature of cultures on the periphery of American society have been ignored because they do not fit comfortably into mainstream culture. Yet, from voices within the Native American population to Appalachian artists to LGBTQ groups, for example, cultures on the periphery have consistently helped shape the American literary identity and have continued to influence American society long after the publication of their works. This course lends credence to the legitimacy of the contributions of these underrepresented cultures and explores the role they have in shaping American literature—past, present, and future. American society is a cauldron of various racial, political, ethnic, and religious formations. Amongst these, religious and racial formations provide strong modes of social organization. Both religion and race are also a major stimulus of cultural practices and belief systems. These two modes influence the ideals of democracy, equality, freedom, and even political identifications. The current agitations about Black Lives Matter are drawing attention to the racial divisions that are splitting the American society. At the same time, these movements are receiving the support of people from different religions. The Islam phobia and growth of right-wing militias are also similarly pitting Americans against one another based upon their religious beliefs. American writers, artists, activists, and even poets have drawn attention to these linkages and the pernicious impact it is having upon our society. Their contributions provide an alternate understanding of the strengths and limitations of American democracy. In this course, we will examine a variety of sources to understand how religion and race are shaping American democracy and society.

Difficult situations in life motivate us to think carefully about religion. The forms of religions are based on the well-being of human beings, and they have provided many different ways to follow paths that are good for our mental and physical health. This course will deal with essential questions; do religions offer ways and techniques to support that are good for our well-being? What paths have been provided to lead a good life? How our hope, contemplation, and resilience are rooted in popular religions? What are the methods advised by religions to help practitioners? The course will include traditions that are isolated to a specific culture. However, they have their historical, cultural, and social context, in which they have been beneficial to the practitioners of these cultures. On American soil, they are coming together as a melting pot, and this course will look into how their beneficial value can be used to manage current stresses. This course will look into beneficial teachings from different religions that are becoming mainstream and are practiced in a non-traditional way without converting to a specific religion. The course will cover Christian traditions, Sufi traditions, traditions from People of First Nation, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions. Ways to Stop and reflect and achieve tranquility. Not as a way of worship rather a way of living one’s life with equanimity and hope.

This Capstone course is intended to be the last course taken by seniors prior to completing their bachelor’s degree. It is intended to give seniors the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their program of study. At the start of this course, students will be presented with a complex, real-world problem. As they consider this problem, they will restate it in a format consistent with conducting a data analysis. They will acquire the data needed and pre-process that data as required. They will determine the best method of analysis depending on the problem and the data. They will conduct the analysis obtaining preliminary results, and evaluate the analysis and the results to determine if any adjustments to parameters or hyperparameters need to be made. They will obtain the final results, i.e. the solution to the problem. Last, they will generate a written report and an oral presentation that discusses the problem, the data, the analysis including any parameters or hyperparameters used, the results, and their evaluation of the analysis and results. It is intended that the report and presentation be of sufficiently high quality to serve as part of the student’s portfolio for job interviews or applications to graduate school. (Intended to be the last course in the program)
