This course will examine the military through the lens of sociological theory, specifically focusing on social factors associated with military membership, collective narratives of military members as well as the complex relationships between civilian and military stratification. Comparisons will examine life inside and outside the military including studies of families, veterans, and retirees. Complex social issues and movements key to military history will also be explored including the evolution of combat, human ethics, gender, race, and sexual identity.
